Are you with a company whose products you just love, but you are trying to make money and just can’t? You may just have to, in order to obtain mlm residual income, grieve and let go.

What do I mean by that?

If you have the big dream, but are unable to make any headway towards it, this may not be your fault.

Take a look at your company’s compensation plan, systems to succeed, policies and procedures. They may be extra difficult for you to do, perhaps they are not in alignment with your values, your personality.

Does your upline teach and mentor you? Does the company support you? Does it even make sense to you?

If you can’t do it, you can’t do it.

Why bang your head against the wall or even go into debt?

I know that it’s hard to admit that one company is not for you. You may feel disloyal. It’s okay to use the products and move elsewhere for the business opportunity. Of course, you’ll have to check the policies and procedures to see if there are any restrictions, which in themselves could be a reason for lack of success.

If you are willing to work hard, it’s not your fault.

MLM Residual Income and Motivation vs Empowerment

For network marketing success many companies and uplines host meetings and phone calls for motivation purposes that are designed to get their affiliates into action. Does that really work? And, what’s the difference between motivation and empowerment?

Motivation is an external thing. This is the “rah, rah” mentality reminiscent of a revival-style meeting, with upbeat, usually loud music, bright colors, and everybody on stage or giving testimonials is successful. There’s lots of stimulation. Most people are really “up” at the meeting or phone call except for the ones who are thinking “I can’t do that!”  I can relate to that.

Have you ever been on the motivation roller coaster? I have many times, so I can tell you from experience that’s when I left the meeting or call call all fired up, all pumped up, and when I got home or off the callI had that deflated feeling. “I can’t do that.” “What was I thinking!”

Have you ever had the experience that the motivation just doesn’t get all the way home with you? That’s the external. It doesn’t change you, it doesn’t make you feel you can “do it”. It often, if not usually, doesn’t last. It doesn’t empower you.

So just what is empowerment?

The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary has 3 entries for “empower”.
1) To give official authority or legal power to (act on someone’s behalf)
2) ENABLE
3) To promote the self-actualization or influence, i.e. women’s movement has been inspiring and empowering women.

Well, from that I would surmise that in that last definition the gist would be empowering women to do or be something.

I like the word “empower” and the meaning enable. It implies that the power comes from the inside. It is quieter and more stable, long-lasting and stronger than motivation. It doesn’t flame out.

Since empowerment is internal, inside you, inside me, it can be woven into our beings. It can be acquired, inspired, nurtured, coached.

In fact, as a professional health coach, I very much appreciate how empowering people allows them to break through some of the blocks they have to improving their health.

How is that done? It’s through empowering messenging – it’s how we talk to the people we coach. Can that translate to network marketing coaching? Absolutely.

What kind of a message could you say? Without a complete coaching here, you could say something like, “You are a sensitive person who helps people”. “I see how committed you are to reach your goal”.

When I think about mlm residual income success I think about the culture that a company creates. Some of this is dictated by the Policies an Procedures. Some of it is dictated by the compensation plan. The truth about Arbonne’s compensation plan is that it is a stair-step-breakaway plan.

What does that mean? When Arbonne shows the different levels of achievement and position status, it looks like a stairway. You qualifiy by producing so much in sales, whether you purchase it yourself or other people do. When you reach a certain volume in a certain time period, you can advance to the next management level. It’s actually more complicated than that, but the gist is there.

The breakaway comes if someone you sponsor builds faster than you and they pass your level. In that case, you lose much of or most of the volume they have created and your check drops. Ergo, unless you are building as fast or faster than they are, you lose out, you don’t get paid on everything.  To Arbonne’s credit, you can pick them up again if you build up to their level and beyond.  You haven’t lost them forever, as with other companies.

But what culture does this create? Well, a distributor who is passed by will either work harder, or tend to not help their recruits as hard, or will look for another company, or just quit the business.

Network marketing is an awesome business and creates mlm residual income, and I learned this from Arbonne.  But the truth is that a majority of the people are average part-time networkers who never make any money. The truth is that most of the people who sign up with Arbonne never make any money. They are just wholesale buyers and join to get the discount. Arbonne is great at weaving the dream of unlimited income, but the truth is, the vast majority of average part-time networkers will never have that dream realized with Arbonne.

Arbonne has great training and my experience was with the company that I really needed to change who I was. Arbonne says you have to work very hard. Well, that is correct. It is, after all, network marketing and not netplay marketing. But average part-time networkers do not have much of a chance. The compensation plan is too difficult to qualify for much if any money. And I know a lot of people, besides myself, who bought the next position and believed if we just got there the rest will follow.

What follows is debt.

The truth about Arbonne is that the products are great. It is a great company. But there are other companies where it is easier to earn that few hundred dollars a month that can be the difference between bankruptcy and no bankruptcy. By the same token, it would be easier to earn a legacy income where you can retire and live the life you always dreamed of.

I recall that I often heard at meetings/events that Arbonne International has the best compensation plan. I believed that. The truth is that it doesn’t. I learned through Mentoring for Free how to figure that out.

Remember, if you cannot make it with Arbonne, there is nothing wrong with you. It is not your fault. You need to make a distinction between the products and the business.

What does that mean?

If you dwell too much on the past, beyond what you need to know as a background for your business, it is impossible to be very successful. If you live in the future too much, you will have the same result.

Nothing happens in the past or the future.

You can use the past as a springboard, you can use the future to hold your vision of what you want it to be.

As a professional health coach, I can tell you the the work, all actions, take place in the “now. Our lives are a continual series of moments. “Now” is where the “doing” is.

Leave any blame in the past and don’t carry it with you. Leave the vision in the future, only take the steps now to journey towards the future. We never really get there. It is just a guiding beacon and keeps evolving. The “now” is the journey. Enjoy the journey for mlm residual income success.

How does mlm residual income success and frustration with Arbonne International connect?

Last week I was removed from the Arbonne International Yahoo Groups access. This is a place where people exchange information. The reason given was that some people came across some of my blog articles and considered that I was bashing Arbonne and that wasn’t good for the group.

Sometimes people do not want to look at the truth. When I point out clauses in Policies and Procedures and explain them relative to the 5 Pillars to Success model, there are many companies who do not measure up.

I understand that people have emotional attachments to their companies and the products. How do I know this? Because I had that attachment. I had a terrible time admitting the truth, that I could not be successful with the Arbonne business model.

The products are great. That doesn’t make me (and a lot of other people) any money.

I believe in network marketing. Arbonne is great at spinning the dream of long term residual income. The meetings are fun and exciting and rah, rah. They are very motivational. Motivation is an external thing. I would go home from the meetings and think, “now what?” I couldn’t change me on the inside.

I went into debt trying to build the dream. I could not turn myself into the person I needed to be to build it the Arbonne way. Most people cannot. I have spoken with and heard many other people just like I am – people who did what we were told, went into debt, but could not build the business.

These people, just like I was, wondered what was wrong with them! What’s wrong with me, that I could not build the Arbonne business with all these fabulous products. I had all the tools, I called people, bumped into people, gave samples. I now belong to the NFL – No Friends Left.

I could not be, and these other people could not be, the kind of person who is successful at the Arbonne business. I felt guilty. What was wrong with us? What was wrong with me?

Nothing was wrong with us. It is not our fault. We simply could not make money with that business model.

I have also pointed out language in the Arbonne policies and procedures that points to “ongoing” activities that Arbonne requires business that means that you cannot stop doing them and still expect to be paid. Whether or not the company would enforce that is debatable, but then why is it in there if they never intend to use it?

In addition, Arbonne states in at least 2 places that they can terminate you for no reason.

So, if I point out things that you should know as an Arbonne consultant and that you should know before you sign up, I am revealing what is true.

If I caution people not to get into debt like a lot of us have done trying to build a business we cannot build, I am providing a service. If this makes Arbonne consultants feel threatened in any way, that is not my intention.

I invite anyone who is frustrated with building their network marketing business with Arbonne International or any other company and anyone who is contemplating doing Arbonne or another company as a business, to use the Mentoring for Free system for skills training. Find out what makes up a company friendly to do business with – friendly to the distributor, not just to the company.

If you are a part-time networker, do you want to be paid for what you do? Most companies only pay the top 5%. I’d rather see all you part-time networkers be paid something.

When I say be paid, I mean that you earn money after all your expenses.

Sometimes we need to separate the products from the business. If you cannot do a particular business, find one at which you can be successful.

So many times people equate falling in love with a product with mlm residual income success. They feel that if they love the product then everyone else will love it as well and they’ll have no trouble selling it.

This does not necessarily follow. In fact, it usually does not. More people fall in love with the product and can’t sell it.

Why is that? Well, It always goes back to a couple of things – 1) the Policies and Procedures, which details how you are to do the company’s business, and 2) the Compensation Plan.

How you are allowed to do business is dictated by the Policies and Procedures. The Compensation Plan.

How hard do you have to work to get paid? How long do you have to work to get paid? Do you get paid to retail or is the emphasis on recruit, recruit, recruit (also known as Vampire Marketing – new blood, new blood, new blood)? How many people do you have to have in your organization to make the money you desire?

If you love the product, great. Buy it. Buy it at a discount, if you can. But I would advise you to see if the business aspect is feasible for you if you decide your primary goal is to make money.

Find a company where the average part-time networker can make walk-away residual income. This means you can retire and still make money, assuming the company lasts. Anything less is a waste of time and money for you. Don’t you deserve better than that?

What is mlm residual income success to you? Is it to build the business and then be able to stop and go to the beach? Is to be able to will it to your children and your children’s children so that they can keep collecting the residual income check?

This is the promise, the dream of mlm residual income!

This is the vision  that the mlm companies weave for us.

We’ve spoken before about the importance of reading your policies and procedures.

Those of you with Arbonne International who think you can have walk away residual income, think again. The frustration I see is found in section 3.2.1 Support

3.2.1. SupportIndependent Consultants must have ongoing contact and communication with the Consultants in their downline organizations. Examples of such contact and communication may include, but are not limited to: newsletters, written correspondence, personal meetings, telephone contact, voice mail, electronic mail and the accompaniment of downline Consultants to Arbonne meetings, training sessions and other functions.

The above paragraph was cut and pasted from the Arbonne document June 26, 2006.

I highlighted the word “ongoing” in red so that you would not miss it.

“Ongoing” means that you cannot stop. If you stop the company can stop your check. You cannot retire. So why would you want to build the business with this company?

And you cannot let people “interpret” what this means. It is what it is. It says what is says. The attorneys wrote it.

The attorneys work for the company Arbonne International and this language is not in the interest of the distributor.

I’ve talked to people about this and they are in denial about the consequences of this language. They have loyalty to Arbonne. I understand that. I did, too. I found it emotionally difficult to admit that I had to build somewhere else. That’s okay. The people who “get” it will be better off. The others may take some time to “get” it. We all hate to be wrong, don’t we?

Don’t get me wrong, Arbonne is a great company and has great products. I use some of them.

I could not do the business. Most of the Arbonne consultants I know also are not successful doing the business with this company.

My recommendation? Be a consultant to get the products at a discount. The prices are high anyway. Do the business with another company. People who are in denial – well, that’s their problem.

MLM Residual Income Success for most average part-time networkers very much depends on the company’s compensation plan. Most of us are in the 95% of network marketers who are part-time in the business and about 5% do it full time. The majority of mlm money goes to the top 5% of the earners and not to the 95%. So as a part-timer, what do you think you’re worth? Are you frustrated by not being paid enough?

If you are among the people, which most of us are, who do it part-time, how much time do you have, how hard do you want to work, and how much are you willing to spend to earn some extra money. Remember what you actually earn is not the discount, and is not just the checks you receive.

You earn what you receive minus your expenses. Are you in the plus column or the minus column?

It would be helpful to know on average what percent you are paid and then what you actually clear. In my company the average payout on the products sold is 50%. We are not including bonuses because I’m interested in walk-away-residual income. (With the bonuses it can go as high as 89%)

By the way, when you compare product payouts, use the retail prices, not the discounted or wholesale prices. In my company everyone buys at retail.

Another great way of knowing how you get paid is approximately how many people do you need in your organization to make an extra $100, $500, $1,000, $5,000, etc. each month for residual or recurring income.

In other words, how many people does it take for you to build it once and then walk away while you collect the residual income if you wanted or needed to do so?

For example, in my company it takes about 25 people ordering regularly to earn about $500 a month. For about $10,000 a month it takes a maximum of 400 people either in your organization or ordering regularly. You don’t have to find them all yourself, either.

Long term network marketing success has a number of factors involved, including the compensation plan, the product, and company management experience with integrity.

Arbonne International is a stairstep-breakaway company. What does that mean? It means that in this compensation plan when someone you signed up promotes before you promote you lose a lot if not all of the volume they created and your pay goes down.

So what kind of behavior does that drive in the field? Does it promote an incentive for you to assist your downline to succeed beyond their wildest dreams? Probably not, if your dreams are not furthered, unless you have extraordinary integrity.

Does this model promote an incentive for your upline to help you beyond your wildest dreams if it is not in their best interest?  Maybe, maybe not.

I have heard through a reliable source from Arbonne, but cannot verify, that recently some people were terminated and a vice president’s check was held for a while because people in the organization were teaching others to change into a new upline using a fake name so that they would not promote out and their volume would still benefit the new upline.

Again, I cannot verify this. I do know that it happens in other companies. As far as I’m concerned this is a legitimate reason for people to be terminated – those who practiced this kind of behavior. Why would these distributors take this type of action? Because it’s so hard to make and maintain the volume business to keep the payouts. It’s difficult to find people who will do the business – and you have to have separate legs to promote beyond the basic management level. The only reason the Arbonne distributors were caught, as I understand it, was due to computer system enhancements at Arbonne that allowed Arbonne to track the computers involved.

I will reiterate that I love Arbonne International products. They have great ingredients and give great results. But I cannot do the business. My dreams of network marketing success have taken me elsewhere.

Arbonne International and MLM Residual Income Success

I love many of the quality products produced by Arbonne International and have had mostly good results using them. However I have not and cannot have network marketing success doing the business of Arbonne International.

The problem is myself. And the problem is not myself. This was brought home to me vividly this week. I have been skirting around this issue, but I now know that I owe it to all of you to speak plainly.

Let’s explore one aspect of this lack of success.

I have been an independent consultant with Arbonne for over 8 years. I have tried many of the marketing techniques, tools, and spent a lot of money. I have a lot of knowledge about the products. I still was not successful.

One of the people in my office of my job (J.O.B = Just Over Broke) told me this week that she had signed up with Arbonne recently and was already a district manager (first level of management). She had made all her money back. I congratulated her.

I mentioned how long I had been with Arbonne and that I could not do the business. She said to me, “Well look what I have as an extended contact base.” She is the training coordinator for my department, she works in a couple of jobs outside my company, so she constantly sees a lot of people. The implication was clear – she had a personality and a contact base advantage.

She is a red personality. I am a blue.

Red’s like to sell. They represent about 15% of the population. And only about 1/2 of the reds like to be sold. That leaves 85% plus of the population that does not like to be sold to amd does not like to sell. (Also check out the greens and yellows.)

This really connects with information that I had received that somewhere about 1 1/2 percent of the independent consultants do the business, and the rest just buy at the consultant discount for themselves and family and some friends. Arbonne is growing very rapidly.

But even if 5% were successful doing the business, that still leaves 95% who are not. The likely reason for this is that the Arbonne compensation plan is a stairstep breakaway plan – red personalities can work it. Most of the rest of us cannot. I’ll discuss this more next week.

There’s nothing wrong with the 95% being consultants purchasing with the discount.

I am among many who left a legacy of debt trying to do the business as I was told.
I didn’t get the support I thought I was going to receive. I tried several different marketing campaigns. I felt like I failed.

It’s Not My Fault

Mentoring for Free came into my life through another frustrated Arbonne consultant. She also still uses some of the products.

What a relief it was to find out that it wasn’t my fault. My personality type generally cannot work the Arbonne type of plan.

What Can You Do?

Are you an Arbonne user but cannot do the business and are looking for network marketing success? I’m not asking you to leave the Arbonne products. I’m not asking you to join my new business.

I’m suggesting that you plug into Mentoring for Free to get the skills that will help you find an mlm company that is right for you. There are criteria you need to know. There are skills you need to have to be successful, skills taught no where else. They might even help you be more successful where you are.
